in Miami, waiting to board...

Well, all my good intentions have fallen by the wayside and it has been weeks since I have posted. In that time things have changed -- because of pirates in the Gulf of Aden, we are now skipping Italy, Turkey and Egypt, and will sail around Africa instead. We are happy to be visiting Morocco, Namibia, South Africa and Mauritius though we are mildly disappointed at missing the Mediterranean countries.

We are in Miami now and have had a very full couple of days. We flew out on Monday and had a very good trip here with only minor delays in Denver after a surprise snow storm. We have enjoyed our hotel and walking around downtown Miami to pick up things needed for the trip that we didn't manage to acquire before leaving. We have especially enjoyed the balmy temperatures after the severe winter we left! On Tuesday morning we were surprised and delighted to look out the window of our hotel and see the MV Explorer in view across the bay. I think it became real for us for the first time! So tomorrow we board the ship and we sail tomorrow evening for Nassau to go meet the students. We are really excited to finally be on our way -- especially John who has been preparing for so long. More to follow...

Have a blast! As I type this it is exactly 1 degree outside in Lawrence, KS...not counting windchill.

Hi Theresa,
It was wonderful to read your blog and to know that you are ready to board your ship. How exciting it must feel to get started and to see the ship in the harbour. I'm sure that I would be asking myself, "oh my gosh, it is so big and does it actually float?" Seeing John in the photo in just shirt sleeves was amazing. You'll be happy to know that the snow is melting in the streets today and the temp is going about 0 Celcius...halleluiah! I doubt though that winter will release its grip any time soon.
Looking forward to your further blog entries.
Travel safely,
Love, Jackie
